How does Microsoft Teams Direct Routing work with a Ribbon SBC?
Microsoft Teams Direct Routing connects Teams Phone to your own carrier through a certified SBC. The Ribbon SBC holds an encrypted connection to Microsoft’s SIP proxies on one side and your SIP trunk or E1/PRI line on the other, so Teams users in Pakistan make and receive ordinary phone calls on your carrier’s numbers.

What is a session border controller, and how is it different from a firewall?
A session border controller (SBC) protects and connects voice calls where your network meets a carrier or cloud platform. A SIP session border controller terminates each call, encrypts it with TLS and SRTP, hides your internal addresses, blocks call floods and fraud, and translates signalling. A firewall only decides which traffic may pass. Most deployments need both.
Do I need an SBC for Microsoft Teams Direct Routing?
Yes. Microsoft supports Teams Direct Routing only through a Microsoft-certified session border controller and may decline support cases that involve a non-certified device. The Ribbon SBC 1000, SBC SWe Edge and Edge 8000 appear on Microsoft’s certified list. Capstar Solutions sizes, installs and configures the SBC that pairs your carrier trunk with Teams.
Can I use Teams calling in Pakistan without Microsoft Calling Plans?
Yes, through Direct Routing. When we checked Microsoft’s country availability list on 28 September 2026, Pakistan was not listed for Calling Plans. Pakistani organisations connect Teams Phone to a local carrier’s SIP trunk or E1/PRI line through a certified SBC, such as a Ribbon SBC, and use phone numbers issued by that carrier.
How much does a Ribbon SBC cost in Pakistan?
Ribbon SBC price in Pakistan depends on five things: the model or virtual licence, the number of concurrent sessions licensed, any E1/PRI or analog port modules, high availability (a second unit or instance), and the length of support. Capstar Solutions sends an itemised quote in PKR after a short sizing call. We do not publish list prices.
Should I buy a hardware SBC or a virtual SBC?
Buy an appliance such as the SBC 1000 or Edge 8300 when the site needs E1/PRI, analog phone or fax ports. Choose the virtual SBC SWe Edge when all your trunks are SIP and you already run VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, Nutanix, Azure or AWS. Both run the same Ribbon SBC software and are managed the same way.
Will a Ribbon SBC work with my existing E1/PRI lines or PBX?
Usually, yes. The SBC 1000 and Edge 8300 each take up to four E1/T1 spans and the Edge 8500 up to 32, so an existing PRI can stay in service. Ribbon SBCs also connect SIP and ISDN PBXs such as Avaya and Cisco Unified Communications Manager, which lets Teams and your PBX run side by side.
Does a Ribbon SBC work with my carrier's SIP trunk in Pakistan?
In most cases, yes. A Ribbon SBC normalises SIP signalling and headers, which is how it connects standards-based carrier trunks to Teams, Zoom Phone or a PBX. Capstar Solutions tests your specific trunk, from whichever licensed Pakistani operator supplies it, before go-live. Use lawful, licensed carrier trunks only; this is general guidance, not legal advice.
What is the difference between Ribbon and AudioCodes SBCs?
Both vendors make Microsoft-certified SBCs for Teams Direct Routing and support Zoom Phone BYOC, so either can do the job. Can a Ribbon SBC keep branch calls working if the internet goes down?
Yes, with planning. Ribbon SBCs can fall back to a local PSTN line when the WAN fails and can host Microsoft’s Survivable Branch Appliance for Teams. For Zoom Phone, Ribbon SBCs work with Zoom Phone Local Survivability, which keeps internal calls, transfers and PSTN calls running during a cloud outage.
